Senior at Acalanes High School
I’m Cedric, a high school student from the Bay Area who is passionate about law and political science, particularly when it comes to Sino-US relations. Throughout the past few years, I have closely examined the role that social media has on bilateral conflicts, as well as the impact of anti-Asian racism on the Asian populace during COVID-19.

Senior at Head Royce
I’m Miles, a current high school sophomore in the Bay Area, CA. I’m very passionate about environmental and racial justice, particularly around how the two areas are interconnected and impact each other. I also research the effects of climate change and racial inequities on malnutrition, specifically in children and women. Additionally, I spend a lot of time organizing and participating in community service opportunities at my school and in my free time.

Junior at Lick Wilmerding High School
I’m Julia and I’m a current sophomore in high school, located in the Bay Area, California. For me, my interest in politics sparked after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, in the summer of 2022. I’d always had an interest in feminism—and when it comes to theory, I’ve read everything from Simone de Beauvoir to Margaret Atwood to Roxane Gay—and the current conservative crusade against basic bodily autonomy allowed me to explore the practical application of everything that I had read. In a similar vein to reproductive justice, other topics that I’m passionate about learning more about are largely bioethics related, from germline gene editing, the death penalty, and the wide scale dystopian-esque corruption of the pharmaceutical industry.

Professor of East Asian Studies at New Mexico State University
I am a professor of East Asian and Global History at New Mexico State University, where I have taught since receiving my PhD in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University in 1994. I have published six books on Chinese history and more than 20 articles. I was a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing in 1999, and at the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden, the Netherlands, in 2002-03. I am currently affiliated with the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, where I have been working on a research project since 2017.
I am also a life-long political activist. I was a member of Students for a Democratic Society at Kent State University in 1968-69 and was one of 25 people indicted for the events of May 1-4,1970, when the Ohio National Guard killed four students and wounded nine others during a peaceful protest against the war in Vietnam and Cambodia. I am currently working with the organization Pivot to Peace, which seeks to promote better understanding between the United States and China and to turn American policy towards China away from war and towards peace.
I'm happy to be an advisor for "The Bamboo Chronicle" because I want to support young people trying to make a positive difference in the world and work for a better future.

English Teacher at Acalanes High School
I'm Erik Honda, English teacher at Acalanes High School. I've taught all the grades, and pretty much every class we offer in the 26 years I have been teaching here. Before that I taught for 6 years in East Oakland (I know, I am old!). I'm a bike and BART commuter from my home in San Francisco, and am a neighborhood and political activist there. I also love to support young people in their political journey, which is why I am honored to be asked to mentor this organization.
